Howdy everyone,

Just experimented with the Bookmarks tab in the Properties box and found that we can enter a hard drive filename and path in a Bookmark and the program required to display the file will run and display the file! WOW!

For example, if you have a Word document (HCN.docx) stored on your hard drive in the "c:\documents\PSM\Notes\" folder . . . in the "Location (URL)" box, enter "c:\documents\PSM\Notes\HCN.docx". Then, when you right-click the ticker, scroll to Ticker Bookmarks, and click the selection, the document is opened and displayed in Word.

This is a GREAT feature for folks like me who do a lot of note-taking on our investments. It's much easier to edit and read than the PSM Notes box.

Also tried this with images, plain text files, and PDF files, and all worked just fine.

Hope everyone finds this useful.

-Don

Great find, Don.
Now if only it were possible to hot-link into a tagged spot in a document this would be perfect. BTW I use MS OneNote2007 (which comes bundled with Office 2007 home) for taking my notes which certainly is the best multi-dimensional note-taking tool around to me (certainly beats Word).

Howdy JJ,

Hadn't thought about using OneNote. Just recently purchased MS Office 2010, so I do have it, but have not used it.

What kind of structure / indexing do you use for tracking stocks, bonds, ETFs, etc.?

I've been using the Notes tab in PSM's Properties box for each ticker, but the small display window is not good as the data stored in there increases.

When I discovered we could enter a disk drive address in the Bookmarks tab, I started using Word documents, but it's gonna take a while to get everything moved into individual documents.

So, I'm intrigued about using OneNote. Please tell us more about how you use it with PSM.

Thanks a bunch JJ !

Don,
Sorry, I haven't achieved any sort of integration of OneNote with PSM. I currently store short text extracts in the notes field of PSM (same as you) and more fancy stuff (rtf, graphics etc.) in OneNote. It only occured to me to try to merge the two when I read your post. If OneNote supports tags and then calling up your .one doc with a jump point (e.g. ...path/file.one -AAPL1) this might work, otherwise it won't. I have no idea if the feature is there already or will be one day.
To me, the main time-saver of OneNote is that you don't waste any time with formatting, just pasting website extracts works great and the hyperlink features are great too. Beats a mindmapper by far for speed of use, presentation and flexibility.

Thanks for elaborating JJ. I briefly looked at OneNote when going through the included apps in Office and got the feeling that it would be good to use for this. But just never went to the next step -- figuring out how to use it. I will now definitely take a closer look. Thanks!
