Is there a way to use the SMA50 or SMA200 as an alert. ie... when stock crosses SMA50 and SMA200, send an email or highlight line?

Sorry, there is currently no way to use chart indicators for alerts. It's on the to-do list.

that would be very very valuable, and i'm sure your other users would also view it that way, since a stock crossing it (and in particular both) is a key event for chartists as a significant buy signal .... how realistic and how soon might it be

I agree with Cvandyck. I'm looking for the same functions, too.
